What if bikes had doors….
Wednesday, October 15th, 2008This post is purely for fun…..
I was cycling home last night and started singing “what if bikes had doors” completely out of tune (even though I was making up the tune). Luckily, one of the beauties of singing while cycling is that no one can hear you.
I realised this melody was in response to a number of issues that I’ve recently been thinking about.
- One, is of course - being doored by cars. This is a constant worry for cyclists and makes apparently cycle friendly bike lanes into death traps. Meanwhile, car drivers, are not really aware how dangerous the simple act of getting out of their car can be. I thought maybe if we had some crazy campaigns with inflatable car doors hangng through the street and attached to bike this could raise the awareness of this issue.
- Second point is that people are worried about security and feel they need a door to keep their vehicles from harms way
- Third point is that one of the beauties of bikes is that they don’t have doors - you never enter the vehicle, you are always in your surroundings, not in your vehicle. Potential cyclists sometimes freak out at the prospect of being so exposed, but just as you are more exposed to the world the world is more exposed to you
My cheesy lyrics have not stopped at ”what if bikes had doors” - I also have another song “You used to door us, but now you adore us” - I now just have to work on the body.
