Cycling around the globe

Cycling has a certain stigma attached to it in Australia.  It’s an ALTERNATIVE form of transport.  This almost implies that it’s for special people, rebels, hippies or whatever.

I find this strange considering that worldwide there are 800 million bicycles, twice as many as there are cars.  And what’s more, they are being used A LOT.  Just the bicycles in Asia alone carry more people that all the cars in the world.  In other words, cycling is mainstream, popular culture almost everywhere, it’s just us, hidden away behind our steering wheels that can’t see this.

I would like to take this opportunity to show you some examples of how other countries have embraced this two-wheeled wonder that Australians still shun.  If you know something about cycling in another country (the history, the culture, the infrastructure or just the attitude to cycling) please fill me in.
